UN Warns of Intensifying Settler Attacks in Palestinian Territories

(MENAFN) The United Nations has raised alarms over a surge in violence and forced evictions by illegal Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, while humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip are being hampered by increasing obstacles, including a recent assault on a fuel tanker.

"In the West Bank, increased closure of Israeli checkpoints and road gates since the regional escalation began continues to restrict Palestinian’s access to services and workplaces. Emergency services and humanitarian work are also impacted," a UN spokesperson stated during a briefing on conditions in the Palestinian territories.

The spokesperson emphasized that "operations and violence by Israeli settlers and Israeli security forces is continuing," noting that these actions are "resulting in casualties, damage and forced displacement" among Palestinian communities.

In one specific case, a wave of "attacks, threats, trespassing, and intimidation" originating from a newly formed illegal Israeli outpost forced at least "eight Palestinian families, some 45 people, were forced to leave their community, Shakara, in the Nablus governorate" on Thursday.

Following the displacement, the UN and its partners have stepped in to deliver mental health and psychosocial assistance, legal support, temporary shelter, and financial aid to those affected. The spokesperson underlined that "Palestinians in the West Bank must be protected, and perpetrators must be held to account."
