Palestinian Red Crescent Assists Evacuation Through Rafah Crossing
In its statement, the organization said the group included 20 patients and 20 companions who were traveling to hospitals outside Gaza. The PRCS emphasized that it will continue humanitarian efforts, working with the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, “to facilitate patients' access to treatment outside Gaza, despite the challenges and difficult humanitarian conditions."
According to an Anadolu reporter, vehicles from both the WHO and the Palestinian Red Crescent Agency transported the evacuees to the border crossing.
Israel reopened the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Feb. 2 under extremely tight restrictions, allowing limited passage in both directions. The crossing has been under Israeli control since May 2024.
Estimates suggest that roughly 22,000 injured or sick Palestinians hope to leave Gaza for medical care, as officials describe the health sector as facing catastrophic collapse following Israel’s war. Semi-official figures also indicate that about 80,000 Palestinians have registered to return to Gaza, reflecting residents’ determination to go back despite widespread destruction.
Although Israeli and Egyptian media previously reported that up to 50 Palestinians could cross daily in each direction, actual numbers have been far lower. Under current Israeli conditions, only those who left Gaza after the outbreak of the conflict are allowed to return, subject to intensive security screening.
