Israeli Forces Shoot Palestinian Detainee After Alleged Attack on Soldier

(MENAFN) The Israeli army reported on Saturday that a Palestinian detainee was shot at a military base in the eastern West Bank after allegedly assaulting a female soldier.

According to a military statement, the detainee freed himself from restraints at a Jordan Valley base and struck a female conscript, causing minor injuries. Another female soldier “neutralized the suspect by opening fire,” the army said. The injured soldier was taken to a hospital for treatment, though the army did not immediately provide information on the detainee’s condition.

Reports indicate the detainee, a man in his 50s, was shot in the knees and sustained moderate injuries. He had been arrested on Friday at the Allenby Bridge crossing—known to Palestinians as the Karama Crossing and to Jordanians as the King Hussein Bridge—before being transferred to detention at an undisclosed military facility. Channel 12 reported that the detainee attacked the soldier with a stick, causing superficial injuries.

Since launching its war on the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023, Israel has escalated military activity in the West Bank, including killings, arrests, forced displacement, and settlement expansion—a pattern Palestinians say is intended to pave the way for formal annexation of the territory.

Palestinian sources estimate that over 1,112 people have been killed in the West Bank, around 11,500 wounded, and more than 21,000 detained during this period. In July 2024, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land illegal and called for the removal of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
